After overcoming Novak Djokovic on Friday, Jannik Sinner advanced to his first-ever major slam final at the Australian Open.
Sinner defeated Djokovic 6-1, 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-3 to end the Serbian’s quest for a record-tying 25th Grand Slam singles championship.
After winning her 24th major tournament in September of last year at the U.S. Open, Margaret Court, an Australian, was hoping to surpass her own record for the most Grand Slam singles titles.
When Sinner defeated the top seed in the competition, who was 0-23 entering the match, he became the first male Italian to win an ATP Rankings Grand Slam Men’s Singles match since 1973.
Sinner is also the youngest Australian Open men’s singles finalist since Novak Djokovic in 2008, having turned 22 years and 163 days old.
The only Italian tennis player to have ever made it to the Australian Open singles final is Sinner.
Sinner’s ability is evident in the fact that Djokovic failed to produce a single break point opportunity and missed 19 of his receiving games in this Grand Slam match.
Novak Djokovic is still unbeaten in the Australian Open after losing to Hyeon Chung in the fourth round 2195 days ago. With 33 straight wins at this point, he tied the record for the longest winning streak at the AO during the Open Era.
With his inconsistent serve and prone backhand, Sinner, the fourth seed that starts Sinner, defeated the 36-year-old in the opening two sets with ease. After three meetings, Sinner had defeated Djokovic twice before the end of the previous campaign.
Sinner was in the lead again in the third set, but Novak Djokovic was more composed and stronger in the tiebreak. But the Italian gave up a set and a match point, which gave his opponent the opportunity to tie the match.
Still, Sinner held the advantage in this battle. In the fourth set, he easily won after breaking for a 3-1 lead.
In the final round on Sunday, Sinner will face either Daniil Medvedev, who is ranked third, or Alexander Zverev, who is placed sixth.
