President Joe Biden‘s top aides quietly advised Sen. Joe Manchin to run for reelection for months.
Two White House officials and an unidentified adviser said senior counselor Steve Ricchetti and Biden friends spoke to the West Virginia Democrat. GOP state reelected Manchin.
No plane could carry him.
The senator said he’ll “travel the country and speak out to see if there is an interest in creating a movement to mobilize the middle class and bring Americans together.”
The Senate Democrats’ shaky majority was threatened by disclosure. The Biden administration asked Manchin to run again to protect the Senate majority, a White House official claimed.
Because the president’s reelection campaign is tougher, Manchin may run.
Congressman Manchin is the latest to consider running for president. Recent polling reveals that former President Donald Trump would suffer most from a Robert F. Kennedy Jr. election, but the Democratic Party thinks Jill Stein and Cornel West may garner Biden support. Democrats, especially those close to Trump, want Biden to moderately support Manchin.
Rahna Epting, MoveOn’s executive director, cautioned that “any third-party, quote-unquote unity ticket, a ticket that runs to the middle, will cut into the Biden coalition.” “Joe Manchin could persuade a sizable number of people who supported Joe Biden and opposed former President Donald Trump to support a ticket.”
After quitting Biden and his party, Manchin’s political future is unknown. In July, the senator met with centrist third-party presidential candidate No Labels in New Hampshire. New Hampshire holds early primaries. Group call, he spoke.
No Labels’ ballot access in numerous states scares Democrats about Biden’s reelection. The group was new to Biden. Many privately believe Trump would benefit from a split field.
