Dawn reports that a Hindu woman from the Buner district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has submitted her nomination papers for a general seat in the next national elections.

On February 8, 2024, Pakistan will hold general elections to select the members of the 16th National Assembly.

We have received Saveera Parkash’s official nomination documents for the general seat of PK-25 in the Buner district.

Ms. Parkash is excited to continue her father’s political heritage as a Hindu woman standing for office on the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) platform. For 35 years, retired physician Oam Parkash has been a devoted supporter of the PPP.

Local politician Saleem Khan of the Qaumi Watan Party claims that Parkash is the first woman from Buner to submit her candidate papers for the 2018 general seat elections. Dawn announced this to the public on Monday.

Parkash, a 2022 graduate of Abbottabad International Medical College, serves as the general secretary of the PPP women’s wing in Buner. Apart from endorsing the well-being of the community, she underscored her objective of promoting women’s development by safeguarding their rights and creating secure environments.

She also emphasised how historically women have been marginalised and disregarded in the development industry and how, if elected, she will address these issues.

Ms. Parkash stated in an interview with Dawn that she wished to continue her father’s charitable work in the community by helping the less fortunate. In an attempt to win over the PPP’s top leadership, she turned in her candidate papers on December 23.

According to Ms. Parkash, “serving humanity is in my blood.” She is a medical graduate. She finally made her way into politics after seeing the shortcomings of leadership while working as a physician in public hospitals.

Imran Noshad Khan, a social media sensation and native of Buner, declared that he supports Saveera Parkash unconditionally, regardless of her political beliefs. The integration of Buner into Pakistan took fifty-five years. He emphasised the need for more women to run for public office in this field and thanked her for dispelling stereotypes that traditional patriarchy has fostered.

The Pakistani Election Commission (ECP), according to Dawn, has changed its regulations to mandate that five percent of candidates seeking general seats be women.
