Despite treating survivors of a 5,000-person disaster, Libya’s eastern parliament-backed authorities reported full mortuaries at out-of-service hospitals.
Authorities estimate 10,000 more are lost at sea or buried in the 100,000-person city.
Infrastructure destruction prohibits humanitarian organisations from reaching many areas. Derna has seven entrances, but only two are open.

Libyan mortuaries are recovering after the flood.
The 2011 uprising against Muammar Gaddafi‘s rule shook Libya, and a civil war tore it apart. The scope of the damage shows how defenceless a country that has long struggled with rival factions and anarchy is.
The UN-recognized Government of National Unity (GNU) is in Tripoli in northwest Libya, while commander Khalifa Haftar and his Libyan National Army (LNA) support the eastern-based parliament led by Osama Hamad.
Haftar and his eastern administration are in charge of Derna, which is situated roughly 190 miles (300 km) east of Benghazi.
‘Catastrophe’ that we weren’t ready for
Storm Daniel may have triggered one of North Africa’s deadliest floods.
The incredibly powerful low-pressure system created a tropical-like storm that crossed the Mediterranean and Libya. Daniel caused unprecedented floods in Greece last week, but fewer deaths.
The tragic storm arrives in a year of unprecedented climate disasters and harsh weather, including wildfires and searing heat.
Derna was the worst hit by the flooding when two dams collapsed, sending entire neighbourhoods into the sea.
According to Emergency and Ambulance Services representative Osama Aly, “Libya was not prepared for a catastrophe like that.”

Please remember that Libya is a dangerous country and a gateway to Europe. IRC has provided protection and medical care to vulnerable migrants, refugees, and Libyans during this protracted crisis since 2016.
