Angelo Matthews became the first international cricketer to be timed out for a helmet malfunction in Sri Lanka‘s World Cup group match against Bangladesh in Delhi.
Matthews faced Shakib Al Hasan after preparing. He broke his helmet strap before tightening it over his chin. Chamika Karunaratne raced to grab him a helmet when he called. Shakib then addressed umpire Marais Erasmus. Matthews was timed out under ICC regulations for not being ready for his first ball in two minutes.
Star Sports said reserve umpire Adrian Holdstock: “The fielding captain informed Marais Erasmus, the standing umpire, that he wanted timed out.”
Without his helmet, Matthews learned Karunaratne was sacked. Previous batter Sadeera Samarawickrama left three minutes and twenty seconds earlier.

Matthews was at first indifferent to the umpire, but he got concerned and spoke to Erasmus and square-leg umpire Richard Illingworth.
Matthews whispered to Shakib, who soothed him on the shoulder, after Erasmus and Shakib’s second conversation. When his clockout was upheld, Mathews became angry and pointed at his broken helmet strap.

Angelo Matthews was introduced after Bangladesh had split from their huddle and taken their positions in the field, with Shakib at the top of his mark and ready to bowl.
Heldstock reminded Ian Bishop during the inning break that equipment failures are banned. “As a batsman, I think you need to make sure that you have all your equipment in place in order to make sure you get here, because you actually have to be ready to receive the ball within two minutes—not ready to prepare or take your guard,” she says. “So technically, you should be there within maybe 15 seconds to make sure all those things are in place before you actually receive the ball.”
Holdstock said Samarawickrama’s removal and Mathews’ strap “becoming an issue” took two minutes. The batter wasn’t ready to take the ball for two minutes before the strap generated drama in the afternoon. He received the second delivery two minutes later.”
Videos show Samarawickrama was fired at 1:55.
Matthews was not ready to receive the ball within two minutes, per ICC guidelines. Time Forty finished “Out 40.1″. After a wicket falls or a batsman retires, the next batter must be ready to take or receive the next ball within two minutes, unless time is called. The hitter must meet this or be timed out.”
Mathews left the field in a rage following his dismissal. He flung his bat and kicked his helmet as he departed the field in disgust.
Sri Lanka may fall to 135 for 5 after his dismissal. Charith Asalanka scored 100 points!
