Abrogation of Article 370: The Constitution bench of the Supreme Court is expected to make decisions on many petitions that challenge the repeal of Article 370 and the separation of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories today, December 11. Ahead of the significant decision, Srinagar has tightened security.
Before the Supreme Court’s ruling, adequate security arrangements were implemented to ensure a peaceful atmosphere in Kashmir. “We are duty-bound to ensure that peace prevails in the valley under all circumstances,” said Kashmir Zone V K Birdi, as quoted by news agency PTI on Sunday.

The Inspector General of Police did not provide any information regarding the security setup for today, only stating that “adequate arrangements” have been made. After spending the last two weeks conducting security assessment meetings in most of the ten valley districts, Birdi told PTI, “We are taking all precautions and will ensure that peace is not disturbed in Kashmir.”
The article claims that under CrPC Section 144, authorities have mandated that social media users refrain from disseminating any content that incites secessionism or terrorism or is sensitive to community feelings.
Many districts’ police released a circular stating, “The guidelines aim to provide clarity on actions citizens should take when encountering content related to terrorism, secessionism, threats, intimidation, or communally sensitive material on social media platforms.” —PTI.
In the meantime, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, and Surya Kant will rule. The Supreme Court announced on September 5 that it would reserve its ruling after sixteen days of arguments.
The Centre argued that there had not been any “constitutional fraud” in eliminating the provision that granted the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir unique status, supporting its decision to rescind Article 370.
What does the abrogation of Article 370 mean?
The government’s “path-breaking decision” to strike down the sections of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution that granted the state of Jammu and Kashmir special status was made on August 5, 2019. Thus, for the purposes of the Indian Constitution, Jammu and Kashmir was placed “on par with other states or UTs of the country.”.
