Barcode Architects‘CasaNova triangular tower opens a new chapter in Rotterdam’s high-rise lifestyle. The residential complex reinvents urban living by stressing resident interactions and contrasts with its companion tower.
The triangular tower illuminates Wijnhaven and is visible from all directions. CasaNova links the Oude Haven and Markthal by strategically occupying Wijnhaven and connecting Leuvehaven and Witte de Withstraat to Museumpark. The entrance lobby from Wijnhaven to Wijnstraat welcomes city residents from both sides.

Barcode Architects’ creative response to KCAP’s Rotterdam urban plan’s volume-to-ground ratio gave CasaNova its unique form. The architects took a risk by decreasing capacity at the tower’s base and increasing volume at its peak to meet this necessity. This created a sculpture-like tower on a pedestal. Besides providing CasaNova and The Muse residents with a 1,600-square-meter rooftop garden, its slim form maximizes natural light and views of adjacent structures. Ground-level utilities are integrated into the garden on level five, not the roof.

Due to CasaNova’s triangle shape, homeowners may enjoy 360-degree city vistas, improving their quality of life. Living rooms in the triangle corners have 15-square-meter balconies that gather morning and sunset light. The triangle’s southward tip improves daylight, improving mental clarity and well-being.
Barcode Architects uses hand-cut rusticated reddish-brown stone slabs for the CasaNova skyscraper’s façade. The facade varies with the light due to the stone’s deep texture. As the tower rises, the panels increase, revealing smooth, polished surfaces. The panels add visual interest to the tower as they rise to the top.

Barcode Architects prioritized community areas and gathering locations outside elevator lobbies and atriums to address concerns about loneliness and seclusion in tall buildings. CasaNova and The Muse residents may access city amenities from one platform. Two towers share a rooftop terrace, community garden, kitchen, guest rooms, co-working spaces, conference rooms, exercise centers, and a parcel service room, uniting 200 inhabitants.
A prominent design feature separated residential sections from the parking lot, encouraging unofficial dialogues that foster social cohesion, safety, and community. The parking lot is where many people start their day. After entering CasaNova through a welcome atrium that overlooks the rooftop patio, residents gather before taking the elevator to the upper floors. A thoughtful architectural component enhances the inhabitants’ communal spirit.
