After a team signed Randy Gregory on Friday, Denver’s week improved. On Friday, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported that the Denver Broncos are moving Gregory and a seventh-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2024 sixth-round pick. Citations were in the report.
Even though Gregory passed his physical in San Francisco, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed the contract Friday afternoon. Gregory’s season begins after five weeks.

The 30-year-old pass rusher, who signed a five-year, $70 million contract with the Broncos in 2022, was traded to San Francisco a few days later after it was clear Denver would release him. Gregory has three sacks in ten Broncos games. But he hasn’t played as much in the last two games and didn’t start Denver’s Week 4 win over Chicago.
In the group’s best interests, Broncos head coach Sean Payton told reporters on Wednesday that the organisation cut ties with Gregory. If no trade partner was found, Gregory would be released in two days.
SF residents heard the offer over the phone. After nine games in 2023, the 49ers’ pass rush ranked 22nd. Gregory was signed to help. The third-ranked NFL defence in points allowed and the sixth-ranked defence in yards allowed may improve. Pressure elsewhere may help Nick Bosa win four games without a sack.
Gregory may benefit from joining a top-five defensive back team.
In the 2015 NFL Draft, Dallas picked Gregory in the second round. His NFL debut was disappointing due to early-career injuries and suspensions. Gregory became one of the top free-agent prospects of the 2022 summer after amassing 15.5 sacks in his final three seasons in Dallas. The Broncos had already tried to sign him twice.
Gregory never met Denver’s lofty expectations, but he may need a fresh start.
