Chelsea defeated Brighton by 1-0 in the Carabao Cup

Chelsea defeated Brighton by 1-0 on Wednesday at Stamford Bridge to snap a three-game losing streak and move on to the Carabao Cup fourth round. Nicolas Jackson scored the game’s lone goal.

With only one victory in their first six Premier League games, Chelsea’s poor start to the season put Mauricio Pochettino, the team’s new manager, under pressure.

In those six league games, only five goals have been scored, which is a significant problem. Nevertheless, Jackson, a summer acquisition for Chelsea, gave supporters reason for optimism with a crisp first-time strike in the 50th minute. Cole Palmer, who joined Chelsea from Manchester City and was making his club debut, set up the former Villarreal forward.

Jackson thought he had doubled his and Chelsea’s lead in the 72nd minute, but the goal was called back for offside.

Despite this, a Chelsea team featuring three Brighton players—Marc Cucurella, Robert Sánchez, and Moisés Caicedo—was able to hold on for a crucial first victory in September.

The English Football Association earlier on Wednesday charged Chelsea defender Reece James with assaulting a referee.

The incident is thought to have taken place in the tunnel following Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday.

James has until Friday to respond to the charge.
