On Thursday, 71-year-old actor and DMDK president Vijayakanth passed away in a private hospital in Chennai. According to his party, he tested positive for COVID-19 and was placed on ventilator support. But the hospital diagnosed him with pneumonia.
According to a statement from the hospital, “Captain Vijayakanth was admitted with pneumonia and was receiving ventilator support.” He abruptly died early on December 28, 2023, despite the best efforts of the medical staff.”
On Tuesday, Vijayakanth was brought to the hospital for a routine physical examination. Following the testing, the party said that Vijayakanth was “healthy” and would be going back home.
MK Stalin, the Tamil Nadu chief minister, declared that the DMDK president would be buried with full state honors.
In a message on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his sympathies, stating that the loss of his “close friend” Vijayakanth leaves a “void that will be hard to fill.”.

Earlier on November 20, the DMDK chief had been admitted to the hospital. He was in the hospital getting treatment for a respiratory ailment.
At sixteen, Vijayakanth began his wildly successful film career. His later entry into politics has had a significant impact on his public persona.
In addition to being the DMDK’s founder, he was twice elected to the Legislative Assembly, representing the districts of Rishivandiyam and Virudhachalam. His eleven years as Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly represented the pinnacle of his political career.
Vijayakanth was compelled to step down from active politics due to health concerns.
