Emma Raducanu defeated Elena-Gabriela Ruse in three sets in the opening round of the ASB Classic in Auckland, capping off a much-anticipated injury comeback.
After undergoing surgery on both wrists and one ankle in April, the former British No. 1 faced a formidable Romanian qualifier, but she prevailed 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. As she continues to get ready for the Australian Open, she will play the second-seeded Elina Svitolina in a challenging last-16 encounter.
Raducanu said on the court following his victory in two hours and twenty-seven minutes, “It’s difficult after having such a long hiatus, but I’m grateful to be healthy, to be able to move my body and not be bedridden or in a wheelchair.” Enjoying yourself while just being outside is quite wonderful. I’m thrilled to be joining the tour again and can’t wait to get underway this season in an effort to stay injury-free.”
