On Sunday night, a fire damaged the only access point to the Dolphin Sands spit, trapping many locals and visitors. Around 6 p.m. AEDT on Sunday, the fire broke out. The situation swiftly worsened from an advisory to an emergency warning, forcing the evacuation of nearby properties following the release of an advisory by emergency authorities.

Following the fires on Sunday night at two homes, some twenty people took refuge on the Dolphin Sands boat dock, according to sources.

As the fire was contained by calmer winds on Monday morning, the Tasmanian Fire Service (TFS) downgraded the emergency warnings to a watch and act advisory. Strong northeasterly gusts on Monday caused the fire to spread to the western perimeter, prompting the TFS to issue another emergency warning.

Satellite imagery showed that the Dolphin Sands fire was burning dry coastal heath on Monday. From Tasmania, smoke traveled eastward.
