After Sunday’s loss, the Commanders went 0-6 in the NFC East, and their division rival, the Dallas Cowboys, celebrated their championship.
Dallas dominated Washington in their season opener to win 45-10. After the Thanksgiving loss, defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio was fired. Rapoport said before the Commanders vs. Cowboys game on Nov. 23 that Harris would review Rivera after the season. for any unforeseen events. With the losing streak continuing, Rapoport and NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero predicted Rivera’s firing on Sunday.
Although the Riviera struggled to find success, the franchise has a long and turbulent history. Success is worth the story.
Rivera was strong. The Commanders became the club’s nickname, and Cantancross owner Daniel Snyder was under investigation by the league and Congress before selling the team to Harris after 24 seasons.
The easy-going Rivera, who beat cancer, tried to keep his teams united on and off the field.
A change in the quarterback position marked Rivera’s Washington career. Eight of their quarterbacks were starters—nearly nine, including Jacoby Brissett, who was the starter at the time until a hamstring injury sidelined him. Although the constant onslaught of mistakes behind the line of scrimmage has raised concerns, Sam Howell has shown more determination than any other player. He was benched twice for Brissett, a backup quarterback who started the offense. Given how determined Rivera was to find a franchise quarterback in Howell, it was a bad optic.
The Commanders started the season 2-0 under Howell, but the pass-rushing talent made matters better. Montez Sweet and Chase Young were traded before the deadline. Since the contracts have been finalised, the team has gone 1–8, and the coaching staff has changed.
After the Carolina Panthers released Ron Rivera prior to the 2019 season, this happened. They were in their second year under the new owner, David Tepper.
The future of the Riviera will be interesting as commanders go through many more changes.
In 13 seasons as head coach, the 62-year-old is 102-103-2. He didn’t win six. It might be that he played his last game on Saturday.
Harris’ initial coach selection and future coach are still unknown.
