The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) failed to make an impression in their first three seasons. The Men in God and Purple were in disarray before Shah Rukh Khan’s rise to fame and Brendon McCullum’s amazing recovery in 2008. KKR could never win titles on their own, and they could never win IPL points.
Though he led the Knight Riders, Sourav Ganguly was not able to improve them. John Buchanan was not a popular head coach. We knew that the Knights needed a complete overhaul. After three seasons without a postseason, something has to happen.
Gambhir steps on the brake.
Gautam Gambhir cost KKR 2.4 million in 2011. When it came to the early auctioneer, KKR did not hold back. It was a cunning move, and the Knight Riders never looked back. With Gambhir leading the squad to their first IPL playoffs, a new era was born.
The Knight Riders, the first IPL winners, pulled off an incredible feat in 2012. Before they beat MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Chepauk, it was deemed impossible, but it was actually easier than climbing a mountain.

Two seasons later, in a thrilling championship match, KKR defeated Kings XI Punjab—now known as Punjab Kings—at Bangalore’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Manish Pandey of KKR stole the show as the Knights won their second title, despite a century from Wriddhiman Saha.
Under Gambhir’s leadership, the Kolkata Knight Riders were a formidable squad from 2011 to 2014. KKR is always the overwhelming favorite to win the league.
Gambhir’s 2018 departure from KKR appeared to be the end of his IPL career. He became a member of the Delhi Daredevils team. He gave up playing cricket that season.
The previous six seasons saw Nitish Rana, Dinesh Karthik, Eoin Morgan, and Shreyas Iyer serve as the Knights’ captains. Despite his lackluster performance, Morgan helped them place second in 2021.
Back at his home, Gambhir goes.
Few people expected this unexpected incident. Prior to 2024, on November 22, Gambhir rejoined the Knight Riders. The teacher, not the student. Tigers are again housed in dens. Gambhir has been absent for six seasons since he is the only skipper to have guided KKR to an IPL championship.
Gambhir had the most success with the Knight Riders after playing for Delhi during the first three seasons of the IPL. His remarks upon rejoining the Knights following a six-year hiatus furthered this.
Not much impacts me because I’m not that sensitive. It’s not like that at all. Again, let’s get going. The thought of wearing that purple and gold clothing again makes Gambhir feel like he has a knot in his throat and a burning sensation in his heart.
Gambhir has established himself as a profitable IPL consultant after assisting the Lucknow Super Giants in making it to the postseason in 2022 and 2023. Does he possess the same magical power as a player of knights? It should be interesting to watch.
A time of Gautam Gambhir
A dynamic leader, Gambhir brought a lot of energy to the team. In 2012, Gambhir introduced Sunil Narine, a relatively unknown figure. Narine has been a pillar of support for the Knights for eleven years already.
The Gambhir helped Andre Russell grow. His leadership made it possible for KKR to weather numerous crises during that time. Despite the fact that Karthik, Shreyas, Morgan, and Rana have all played well, the team has changed since he left.
The return of Gambhir is expected to infuse new life into the Knights for the upcoming season, following their elimination in the 2023 IPL. During games at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, every time the camera turned to Gambhir, the cry “Gauti, Gauti” would play. Bangalore is going to celebrate “Goutam Dada” at this famous spot.
At KKR, Gautam Gambhir has chosen a different path. Gambhir must lead the Knights back to their previous levels of team performance under pressure.
‘Nothing Short of a Dream’: Nitish Rana Honors KKR Mentor Gautam Gambhir
Kolkata Knight Riders interim captain Nitish Rana welcomes Gautam Gambhir back as the 2024 IPL coach. Rana, who succeeded Shreyas Iyer last year, called Gambhir his childhood hero and said working with him was unusual. Chandrakant Pandit will rigorously train Gambhir.
Gautam Gambhir left the Lucknow Super Giants on Wednesday after two years under KL Rahul. In both seasons, Andy Flower has Lucknow in the playoffs. In 2024, KKR’s Nitish Rana matters. Learning from an IPL legend is his goal.
As a child watching cricket, I never imagined playing on the same field and wearing the same colors as my hero, @GautamGambhir bhai. Good mentor to @KKRiders. I want to follow his honorable leadership. Cheers to a fantastic voyage!” Nitish Rana said this on the defunct Twitter app X.
Shah Rukh loved Gambhir’s “different avatar.” Gamhir shared honest comments and KKR jersey photographs on social media.
“Gautam has always been part of the family, and here is our captain returning home in a different form as a “mentor.” Chandu Sir and Gautam should teach KKR sportsmanship and perseverance. “He was much missed,” Shah Rukh said.
Gambhir led struggling KKR to their first IPL title in 2012.
“I’m hungry, and I’m back,” said Gautam Gambhir.
“I’ve come back. I’m hungry. I am the twenty-third. On his old Twitter account, X, Gambir wrote, “Ami KKR (sic).” Earlier in the day, Gambhir tendered his resignation from the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) of the Indian Premier League.
“I am bursting with love and gratitude for all the players, coaches, support staff, and everyone else who has helped to make this journey truly unforgettable. I am officially ending my perfect journey with the Lucknow Super Giants.” I would like to thank Dr. Sanjiv Goenka for his help in starting this incredible franchise and for always being there for me in all of my pursuits. I’m confident the group will flourish in the future and make all LSG fans proud.Salutations, LSG Brigade!” He declared.
