Holger Rune stunned everyone on Wednesday by winning 6-3, 2-6, 7-6, and (2). This moves him to the Indian Wells quarterfinals against #4 seed Daniil Medvedev.
Rune defeated the champion, staying on match point.
Holger Rune lost the opening set to Fritz in 32 minutes, appearing bewildered. However, he recovered to force a second-set tiebreak and save a match point.
After winning the second set, Rune, 20, defeated his first American opponent to lead 3-1 in the final.
That made no sense. Rune says, “I really just tried to stay in the moment and just try to play better point-to-point.” “By the conclusion of the second set, I was able to raise my game very dramatically, which meant everything for the match.”
I’m grateful I survived the first and second sets, when he dominated. I repeatedly promised myself I would find my calling. Despite the danger, I’m glad I found it.”
Holger Rune will face last year’s runner-up, Medvedev, in the next round. Medvedev defeated Grigor Dimitrov 6-4 to keep his title aspirations alive after falling in the Australian Open final.

The loser, Luca Nardi, defeated Casper Ruud, who will face Tommy Paul. Ruud defeated Frenchman Gael Monfils 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-4 earlier.
Paul pulled 20-year-old Italian Nardi back to earth on Monday after his idol, Novak Djokovic, startled him. While serving, Paul won 6-4, 6-3 and hit five aces.
