Even though there were Internet outages during the event, Imran Khan, the country’s imprisoned former prime minister, spoke to supporters using an artificial intelligence (AI)-generated audio clip.
Because of the picture of Imran Khan from his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party event that was played over the audio, tens of thousands of people watched it live on social media, and it received over 1.4 million views on YouTube.
Declaring, “Our party is not allowed to hold public rallies,” Imran Khan urged his listeners to cast a lot of ballots in the general elections scheduled for February 8. “There are kidnappings of our people and harassment of their families.”
However, consumers bemoaned sluggish Internet speeds and throttling—a tactic telecom officials used to stifle app streaming—all throughout the world, which prompted further concerns about openness in light of the approaching elections.
According to Pakistan’s telecom authority, Internet accessibility seemed to be fine overall, even though the outages were being looked into.

Representatives of Khan’s party, which organised the event because it is the subject of a state-backed crackdown on in-person gatherings and its leader is forbidden from speaking to the media, said that the address was taken from a written version that Khan had approved while he was incarcerated.
In charge of overseeing the elections and accused of supporting Khan’s opponents, Murtaza Solangi, Pakistan’s interim minister of communication, did not reply to a request for comment from Reuters.
Khan has been detained since his conviction and three-year sentence for fraud on August 5. Legal experts contend that he is not entitled to a fair trial because he is involved in several court matters, some of which are being held in secret while he is incarcerated.
Since the 71-year-old former cricket great was removed from office in a vote of confidence in parliament last year, a political storm has erupted around him. The party’s crackdown came after followers of the politician assaulted military installations in May to protest his brief incarceration.
Khan won the most recent general election in 2018. Khan’s opponents claim he was aided in winning by the military, which usually has disproportionate influence in Pakistan to establish and destroy governments.
In addition, he holds the military accountable for his exit following a conflict with generals over the designation of Pakistan’s top intelligence agency, even though the military denies having either endorsed or dismissed him.
