Following their victory against Australia, India shot to the top of the MRF Tyres Men’s ODI Team Rankings, demonstrating their progress as they prepare to host the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2023.

After winning the first ODI, India (116 rating points) overtook Pakistan (115) as the team with the highest rating. Australia is currently in third place, but the distance between them and the top two has grown after they dropped two points to 111.

As a result of the victory, India, which already owned the top rank in Tests and T20 Internationals, now has it in every format.

In the opening ODI, India easily defeated Australia by a margin of five wickets. The highlight of their bowling effort came from Mohammed Shami’s five-wicket haul after acting skipper KL Rahul decided to bat first.

In response, Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad scored fifty runs each in a 142-run opening stand. Despite losing a few quick wickets, the hosts were able to win with fifty-plus scores from Surykumar Yadav and Rahul.

India, Pakistan, and Australia competed for first place in the most recent ODI Team Rankings following the conclusion of the Asia Cup and Australia’s ODI series against South Africa.

Despite not making it to the Asia Cup Final, Pakistan kept the lead. India and Australia both had opportunities to win the ODI championship during the Asia Cup and the South Africa series but dropped critical matches.

Australia’s chances of qualifying as the top team for the World Cup are gone after the setback. Pakistan may win the title if Australia wins the last two games.

A win in this series will ensure that India has the advantage heading into the crucial match against their own country.

India now leads all game types after dominating Tests and Twenty20 Internationals. Only one team has won all major men’s cricket tournaments. Only South Africa has reached this milestone since August 2012.

India has been solid in the longer format and qualified for the World Test Championship Final in June for the second month in a row, but they missed the target again. They have a nearly perfect bilateral series record, except for the 2021–2022 loss to South Africa.

2022 T20 international events saw India reach the T20 World Cup semifinals. Since the 2021 T20 World Cup, they have only lost one series out of fourteen, making their bilateral T20I performance even more spectacular.
