Shaheen Afridi was allegedly stripped of his captaincy for the Twenty20 international team, according to former all-rounder Shahid Afridi.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) named Babar Azam to lead the squad in limited-overs cricket, replacing Shaheen.
“I want Shaheen to focus on his own cricket,” Afridi said, going on to say that the left-arm bowler had disregarded his advice and signed with the Lahore Qalandars (PSL) of the Pakistan Super League. Afridi made a public statement available.
Afridi went on, “I always tried to keep Shaheen away from captaincy,” emphasising the mistrust he and the other former captains had for the amicable end to their careers as captains.
In a statement, the board made it clear that the leadership change was a “strategic move” intended to safeguard the welfare and best interests of the players. The board also concluded that this decision showed the PCB’s dedication to safeguarding players’ careers, particularly those of fast bowlers.
After Babar resigned from the Twenty20 team in November of the previous year due to the team’s dismal performance in the 2023 Asia Cup and the One-Day International World Cup, the board decided to name Shaheen as the team’s captain. It is imperative to keep this in mind.
Afridi, who reaffirmed his support for Mohammad Rizwan, claimed to have genuinely urged the former PCB chairman to name the wicketkeeper batsman as the team’s captain when playing white-ball cThis occurred as Afridi continued to express his opinions on the matter.
Following his reappointment, Azam’s first task as captain will be to lead the squad in the upcoming Twenty20 International series against New Zealand, which begins on April 18.
