Jordan Gill “The Thrill” Gill looked to have given up on fighting after two devastating stoppage losses, but he shocked Michael Conlan by TKO on Saturday to bring his career back to life.
After stopping the 6-1 favourite Conlan (18-3, 9 KOs) all the way around the ropes, 29-year-old Gill (28-2-1, 8 KOs) forced referee Howard Foster to stop the bout at 1:09 of round 7.
It’s possible that Irish Olympian Conlan, 32, is nearing the end of his career because he lost for the third time in two years. With this victory, Gill’s career is back on track after Kiko Martinez derailed it in four rounds for the European featherweight title fourteen months ago.
Gill later revealed that he faced significant psychological and professional challenges as a result of Martinez’s defeat; hence, Gill’s success represents an incredible turnaround. Gill disclosed to the audience that, following his divorce from his wife this past summer, he had planned to take his own life. But next week, he’s launching his own gym.
Not many people know about the adventures I’ve had this year. Gill, an Englishwoman, remarked in Chatteris, “I kind of lost touch with myself after the Kiko loss.”

Gill’s blows didn’t appear to register with Conlan at all. Following a right hand, Gill startled him with a clean left in the second round, and a subsequent right hand knocked him out in the third. In the fourth round, Conlan showed that he was not going to back down.
He battled back from both postures and sank both shots to both sides in an attempt to find an upstairs shot that would change the direction of the fight. Both as an amateur and a professional, Conlan was a crowd favourite due to his fiery demeanour.
In the sixth round, Conlan began to show his mettle. He would find a way to get near Gill’s torso and land uppercuts that would deflate him a little.

That rush of energy was short-lived, as Gill surprised Conlan with a clean left again in the eighth. Two right hands put pressure behind Conlan’s ear, causing his legs to give way and bringing the stop.
The Belfast native had only lost two previous championship fights: in May of that year, Luis Alberto Lopez defeated him in five rounds for the IBF featherweight title, and in the eleventh round of 2022, Leigh Wood defeated him for the WBA featherweight title.
