Jorge Masvidal announced his retirement on X, previously Twitter, on Tuesday, just eight months after declaring his retirement at UFC 287.
Beyond his brief statement, the two-time UFC welterweight championship challenger did not offer any more information, and he did not immediately reply to MMA Fighting’s request for more remarks.
Masvidal declared in October 2023 that he would be going back to boxing competitions after twenty years of mixed martial arts.
“It’s early next year, and I can tell you somebody is going to get killed,” Masvidal said in an ESPN.com interview. “No names right now, but I can tell you.”

Masvidal has a lengthy history in combat sports, notwithstanding the recent declaration by Mike Perry of the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) that he would be interested in a bare-knuckle bout. Still, Masvidal emphasised that he preferred gloved fights.
In April, Jorge Masvidal announced his retirement following his unanimous defeat against Gilbert Burns. This was his fourth loss in the octagon since losing to Kamaru Usman at UFC 251, when he was the champion. Nine months later, after a complete training camp, he fought Usman once more and was brutally knocked out at UFC 261.
Jorge Masvidal turned his attention to marketing after retirement, serving as the spokesperson for the “Gamebred” bare-knuckle MMA promotion.
The company held its sixth event that November, with UFC veterans Roy Nelson and Alan Belcher in the main event.
During an April appearance on The MMA Hour, Masvidal said that he would need “something crazy” to bring him back into competition and that he would need the UFC’s approval, but he did not completely rule out competing again.
It remains to be seen if Masvidal’s comments indicate that the MMA has given its approval for his return.
