O’Neal went away unexpectedly on Friday, according to a post on Instagram by his son Patrick, whom he had with Leigh Taylor-Young, his second wife.
Writing, “So this is the toughest thing I’ve ever had to say, but here we go,” said Patrick O’Neal. “My dad passed away peacefully today, with his loving team by his side, supporting him and loving him as he would us.”
O’Neal was first identified in 2001 as having chronic myelogenous leukemia, and then in 2012, prostate cancer was identified. It remained unknown what caused the death.
