Maria Sakkari defeated Coco Gauff 6-4, 6(5)-7(7), 6-2 on Saturday to move to the 2024 Indian Wells semifinals, where she will face Iga Swiatek on March 18.
The Greeks shocked everyone by winning the second set, despite the fact that the match had to be postponed due to bad weather.
Maria Sakkari easily won the opening set against the unwell US Open champion Gauff.
Rain during the second set forced the players off the court. When play resumed, Gauff won the second set following a furious rally.

However, Sakkari recovered, compelling her opponent to give up and winning the third set to go to the championship match.
“I don’t want to disrespect Coco, but after this exciting two hours and forty-one-minute fight, it would have been amazing if this match was over an hour ago,” Sakkari said.
“I’m going to celebrate this win, even if it took three sets to do so.”When things got rough, I was thinking about the finish line for the second set. Still, that was a notable triumph.
“Coco is a really dangerous individual. She is incredible. She wants to win each and every game. I’m thrilled to be back for this final game.”
She trails Iga Swiatek 3-2 in their head-to-head encounter after losing her last two matches. She is currently fighting against Swiatek. To have one more shot at the title, Maria Sakkari needs to break her losing streak against the Pole.
It’s true that we didn’t do a live show for two years. I think that two years ago, we were very different from each other. Her streak started maybe a few weeks earlier. Sakkari stated that “you know, having that lead doesn’t really mean anything because she’s the best player in the world right now.”
I’m simply going to try to hang onto that advantage and keep winning two games ahead of her, even though it will be incredibly tough.
