Australia’s Melbourne On Saturday, Australia’s Matthew Ebden and India’s Rohan Bopanna became victorious in the men’s doubles Australian Open, defeating Italy’s Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori 7-6(0), 7-5.

The second seed went to the ground and bowed to the Rod Laver Arena crowd after defeating their Italian opponents.

Bopanna, 43, became the oldest male player to win a Grand Slam championship when he lost the mixed doubles finals in both 2017 and 2018. The Indian sensation won his 17th straight Open victory, marking his first taste of success in Australia.

This individual doesn’t even think of age as a number. At his core, he is a champion, a fighter, and a young guy. I have supported him unwaveringly for the whole year,” Ebden said.

The crowd helped Bolelli and Vavassori win their first break point at 5-5 and tie the set.The combination of Australian and Indian players prevailed in the tiebreak and maintained their serve.

It looked like Ebden would serve to win the match when Vavassori’s service was broken in the second set. At 5-5, the player who served first was locked in.

“This could not have been possible if I did not have a fantastic Aussie partner by my side,” Bopanna said.

Matthew Ebden, who has participated in three additional tournaments this season, will be second in the standings on Monday after Bopanna. This is the team’s first major win after losing the US Open final last year.

Wimbledon men’s doubles champion Ebden won in 2022 and Australian Open mixed doubles in 2013, while Bopanna won in 2017.

In 2015, Vavassori was participating in his first-ever major final, while Bolelli was emerging victorious in the Australian men’s doubles tournament.
