On Tuesday night, House Republicans chose Rep. Mike Johnson as their GOP speaker nominee. Johnson needs 217 votes to win. Three weeks after Kevin McCarthy‘s historic fall, Republicans have yet to choose a speaker.
Johnson won after a turbulent day in which Republicans nominated Minnesota Rep.
After right-wing conference opposition and harsh criticism from former President Donald Trump, Tom Emmer withdrew as speaker candidate hours later.
The secret ballot final selected Johnson as the speaker nominee with 128 votes. McCarthy got 43 votes, the second-most, and several House Republicans blame him for undermining Johnson’s rise. Sources stated that some members urged McCarthy to return as speaker and name Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan his “assistant speaker” before Tuesday night’s voting.
Johnson Survival at GOP Speaker
Johnson survived a crucial follow-up vote late Tuesday evening and announced that the full House would vote on a speaker at noon ET on Wednesday, which bodes well for his bid.

Emmer is the third GOP conference nominee to drop out after failing to win the gavel.
After securing the party selection in a secret ballot vote on Tuesday, Emmer faced immediate resistance from his conference’s right flank and a strong statement from former President Donald Trump. After calling Emmer a “globalist RINO,” Trump wrote on Truth Social that voting for him “would be a tragic mistake.” As Emmer left, Trump stated he had a “big impact”.
Emmer voted to certify the 2020 election, keep the government open for 47 days, pass the bipartisan debt default prevention measure, and codify same-sex marriage, all of which hard-right supporters have listed as campaign themes.
Trump Call
Sources said Trump’s staff called GOP members to reject Emmer for speaker.
Despite a pleasant weekend talk with the former president, Trump slammed Emmer on Truth Social on Monday night.
