On October 2nd of each year, Indians celebrate Gandhi Jayanti. This day in history marks the birth of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, better known as Mahatma Gandhi. Beloved by the people as “Mahatma” or “Bapu,” he was essential to the Indian independence cause. Mahatma Gandhi used a variety of nonviolent movements to show the effectiveness of ahimsa, or nonviolence. Throughout, his goals and ideals served as an inspiration to leaders.
Every year on October 2, Indians commemorate Gandhi Jayanti and honor the “Father of the Nation” for his accomplishments. To encourage peaceful communication, the day is also marked as the “International Day of Non-Violence.”

- On October 2, 1869, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born in Porbandar, Gujarat.
- He married Kasturba Gandhi at 13. The couple has four boys.
- He traveled to South Africa in 1893 to become a lawyer and worked there for 22 years. After his forced evacuation from a first-class train cabin, he protested racial segregation in Pietermaritzburg.
- Gopalkrishna Gokhale advised Gandhi to wait a year before getting involved in politics after returning to India in 1915. He started in Mumbai (then Bombay) and visited the entire country. In 1917, Gandhi launched the Satyagraha in Champaran, Bihar.
