Russia says it attacked Kharkiv in reaction to Ukraine's Belgorod attack

Belgorod attack: Sirens alerted Belgorod’s residents to a potential missile strike from neighbouring Ukraine, advising them to seek shelter.

The warnings followed an airstrike by the Ukrainians on Belgorod earlier in the day that claimed 22 lives and an attack on Ukraine by a Russian drone on Saturday night.

Regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said that the tragedy that occurred in Belgorod on Saturday, which left over 100 people injured, was among the worst to occur on Russian territory since Moscow invaded Ukraine 22 months ago.

The Russian authorities connected Kiev to the disaster. It took place the day after Russian bombers attacked Ukraine for eighteen hours, killing at least forty-one civilians.

The Russian Defence Ministry identified the attack’s armaments as Olkha missiles with cluster bomb payloads and Vampire rockets manufactured in the Czech Republic. It offered no further details, so NBC News was unable to independently confirm its assertions.

On social media, the ministry declared, “This crime will not go unpunished.”

On Saturday night, Russia called an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council and charged Kyiv with carrying out a “terrorist attack.” Envoy Vasily Nebenzya made the accusation. Nebenzya said that Ukraine had committed “a deliberate act of terrorism directed against civilians” in remarks made public by Russian official media.

Earlier on Saturday, Moscow authorities announced that they had shot down thirty-two Ukrainian drones over the cities of Kursk, Bryansk, Oryol, and Moscow.

According to Russian reports, cross-border shelling killed two additional Russians. Late on Friday night, a missile attack on a private residence in the Belgorod region resulted in the death of one man and the injuries of four others. Another incident in the Bryansk area claimed the life of a 9-year-old.

The many drone strikes that have taken place in western Russian cities since May have been attributed to Kiev by Russian authorities. Attacks on Russian territory or the Crimean Peninsula are never acknowledged by the Ukrainian government. Historically, though, major strikes on Ukrainian cities have preceded more extensive aviation operations against Russia.

The Ukrainian Air Force stated in a report released on Sunday that 21 of the 49 drones Russia had launched the previous evening had been shot down.

In an attack on Kharkiv in the east, twenty-eight people were hurt, according to a report regional governor Oleh Syniehubov delivered on Sunday. Additional damages, according to the regional prosecutor’s office, included damage to central hotels, residential complexes, kindergartens, retail establishments, and governmental structures.

Authorities in the region surrounding the capital, Kyiv, claim that a Russian drone strike caused a fire at a vital infrastructure location. But they left out the name of the facility.

Much of the fighting along the front line has stalled due to winter weather, following the failure of Ukraine’s summer counteroffensive along the roughly 620-mile line of contact.
