Sam Mostyn will succeed Anthony Albanese as Australia’s next governor general.

King Charles authorized the prime minister’s nomination of business and community leaders.

She will be Australia’s second woman and 28th governor general.

A statement from Albanese on Wednesday said, “Sam Mostyn is an extraordinary leader who represents the best of modern Australia.”

When David Hurley takes office in July, she will succeed him.

“I’m excited to represent the ideals, ambitions, and aspirations of all Australians,” he stated. “This wonderful honor is my acknowledgement.” “I am ready to serve with honesty, empathy, and dignity; I will never underestimate or take for granted the responsibilities that come with holding a position of authority.”

Mostyn became an Order of Australia officer in 2021 for her outstanding service to women, the community, and business.

On Wednesday, she told the press at her birthplace, the former Canberra hospital, that she was the daughter of an army officer and went to public schools.

After graduating from the Australian National University with legal and arts degrees, Mostyn joined the Supreme Court of Appeal of New South Wales.

In 2018, she received an honorary doctorate of laws from ANU.

She serves on the Virgin Australia, Transurban, Aware Super, Mirvac, Citibank Australia, and Alberts Music boards.

She helped create the AFLW competition and became became the AFL’s first female commissioner.

According to Mostyn, “being of service is what often provides a person with their greatest happiness and sense of purpose—a fact that millions of Australians know to be true.” “That is undoubtedly the case for me, and serving as governor general of this wonderful country is the greatest purpose I can think of.”

Australia’s highest official, the governor general, represents the king. Usually, kings designate them for a five-year term.
