Senator Bahramand Khan Tangi, who was a member of the PPP before deciding to withdraw his support for a blanket ban on social media, has changed his mind.

He said these sites damage the religious and cultural fibre of the country and its youth by spreading false information and hate speech.

Plus, he said that people were using these sites to promote damaging rumours about the military, which would reflect poorly on the nation and its interests.

In order to protect the youth of today from the potentially catastrophic repercussions of these platforms, he pleaded with the authorities to prohibit them immediately.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) had voiced concern that the ban might undermine democracy and infringe on the basic rights of Pakistani citizens.

In a formal statement, the PPP distanced itself from the motion, emphasizing its independence while restating its support for the expulsion of Senator Tangi from the party for his repeated infractions of party protocols. After failing to progress in the Senate, Senator Tangi was the one who revoked the resolution.
