Barcelona president Joan Laporta has dismissed the notion of having Lionel Messi return for a single game on loan, but she has reiterated the team’s intention to have the striker return for a fitting farewell at a later time.
Messi left Barcelona at the end of his almost two-decade career in 2021. The team had no choice but to let him go because they were unable to register his new contract in accordance with La Liga’s strict financial requirements.
After spending two largely awful seasons at Paris Saint-Germain, rumours circulated that Messi would be returning to Barcelona. Still, he chose to sign with Inter Miami of Major League Soccer.
Barcelona is reportedly considering loaning Messi to them for just one game in an attempt to give him a more suitable sendoff. Nonetheless, Laporta voiced doubts about whether this type of activity conforms with FIFA’s rules.

“Messi’s return will be discussed later. Laporta expressed her doubts to EFE that FIFA would allow a one-game loan. Many reports exist.
We’ll take our cue from Messi and his family and aim to accomplish our goal together. Messi deserves to be honoured as the best player in history by Barcelona because we value and respect him so much.
“I don’t know if it will be when we return to the Spotify Camp Nou at the end of 2024 or when the stadium is complete by July 2026.”
Laporta gave the following response when asked why Barcelona chose not to acquire Messi during the summer transfer window: “It was left a bit in limbo.” Ultimately, it never happened because all he said made perfect sense. He wanted to go to Inter Miami because he thought it would provide him with some stability after the pressure he had been under in Paris. We accepted the ruling that was made.”
When Inter Miami plays Newell’s Old Boys in February, Messi will have the opportunity to reunite with another of his previous teams—the squad he played for during his childhood.
