The indictment of Bob Menendez highlights: Bars of gold and bills

A total of gold bars worth over $100,000. A brand new Mercedes-Benz convertible was in the garage. There were stacks of cash inside a jacket with “Bob Menendez” stitched on the breast.

On Friday, federal corruption allegations against Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., his wife Nadine, and three other individuals were announced. The Southern District of New York’s US attorney, Damian Williams, has signed the indictment at the bottom.

An episode of “The Sopranos” may have served as inspiration for the June 2022 federal raid on the Menendez home in New Jersey and investigation into their email and phone accounts.

Both Menendez and his wife have denied all allegations of improper behaviour.

Stacks of cash and prints

The closets of the Menendez family’s Englewood Cliffs house contained close to $500,000 in cash, including a sizeable roll of cash that was hidden under a blazer from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus bearing Menendez’s name.

The prosecution claims one packet included co-defendant Fred Daibes’ driver’s fingerprints, DNA, and return address. On January 24, 2022, Nadine Menendez texted Daibes “thank you,” the complaint alleges. This is “Christmas in January.”

Federal investigators allege they found money stuffed in Menendez's jackets when they executed a search warrant in June 2022.

It is “pretty damning,” according to Patrice Schiano, a lecturer at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a former FBI forensic accountant.

Therefore, it doesn’t surprise me that there could be hidden cash in the house. Schiano continued, “If they brought the cash to the bank, it would be disclosed.” However, it will be difficult to dispute that since any jury is sure to find “That’s a lot of money in the house.”

Menendez’s wife benefits.

In exchange for the Mercedes-Benz, Menendez’s wife allegedly interfered with a state criminal prosecution of a Uribe friend accused of insurance fraud and a family member’s job investigation. The other defendants are Wael Hana and Jose Uribe.

Nadine Menendez texted Uribe. Your indictment dubbed you a “miracle worker” who granted wishes. Keep it in mind.

The prosecution also said that Menendez helped Hana get military funding for Egypt in exchange for a promise of a job for his wife that never materialised.

After writing to her husband, Nadine Menendez requested that an Egyptian official amend a $300 million aid proposal for Egypt.

The Justice Department believes Menendez “ghost-wrote the letter on behalf” of the Egyptians and emailed it to his wife. I am forwarding an email to Hana. Soon after, Menendez and his wife destroyed the emails.

American University Washington College of Law professor Andrew Guthrie Ferguson says “almost everyone in this digital age runs the risk of having their digital lives revealed by law enforcement investigators.” He implicated himself using trackable digital technology, showing how easy every crime is. Your guilt or innocence

Gold bars

Two days after Menendez met personally with a representative from Egypt, Hana bought 22 one-ounce gold bars.

Each of them has a unique serial number. According to the prosecution, federal authorities eventually located two of them at the Menendez home.

They also discovered that on January 29, 2022, Menendez looked up “kilo of gold price” on Google.
