McDavid has scored one goal, provided four assists, and totaled nine points in his last two games. The Edmonton Oilers beat the Anaheim Ducks 8-2 on Sunday.
In just one week, McDavid’s point total dropped from 13 to 25, tying him for 13th place in the NHL scoring race.
The Edmonton captain, who has scored the most goals in the NHL the last three seasons and five times overall, said, “Obviously, confidence is a big part of it.” In the group, every guy replied, “I think that’s why you’re seeing guys start to have success.”
Not just a light switch that four or five guys can flip on, either. A team is required, and I think we’ve been playing better lately, with some guys starting to get better.

McDavid currently has more points than any other active NHL player after scoring nine in a single game.
Zach Hyman has helped the Oilers (7-12-1) win two straight games and hold onto second place in the Pacific Division by scoring two goals and dishing out an assist. The team’s other scorers include Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Mattias Ekholm, James Hamblin, Evander Kane, and Leon Draisaitl.
Hyman thought McDavid would take back control of the scoresheets in due course.
As Hyman puts it, that should come as no surprise. “You see how cut off from everyone he was for the past few years?” These are the times that everyone goes through. That just happened to happen at the beginning of the year. You start to think to yourself, “Oh, what is going on?” when that happens. Nor was it limited to him. Every member of the team participated in the task. Every member of the team is impacted.
“It’s been a good couple games here, but we’ve got to keep building, and we’re still behind the 8-ball.”
Edmonton’s starter, Stuart Skinner, made 21 saves to secure the victory.
Max Jones responded for the Ducks (9-12-0), who have now lost six straight games.
The head coach of the Ducks, Greg Cronin, said, “It’s awful to be on the losing end of an 8-2 game, but talking to (general manager) Pat Verbeek afterwards, a lot of our guys are not used to seeing McDavid or Draisaitl, and the team’s fast, so we’ll learn from it.” We’ve experienced a brief unlucky period. We need to come up with a way out.
Anaheim’s John Gibson replaced Lukas Dostal after Edmonton scored six goals on sixteen shots in the second period. Of the ten tries, Gibson stopped eight of them.

The Oilers scored three goals on their first five shots on goal, and before the halfway point of the first period, they were ahead 4-2.
Three and a half minutes into the game, a goal by Jones gave the Ducks the lead. A little over a minute later, Edmonton responded with their first shot of the game. After Connor Brown’s backhand ball went over the goal line, Kane scored his eleventh goal of the year.
Before netting his first point as an Oiler, Brown participated in 14 games following the signing of his summer free agent deal.
The Ducks took an early lead at 6:10 when Jones, in the slot, stumbled for his second foul of the game, spun, and shot.
The Oilers knotted the score midway through an intense first period. McDavid decided to go for a three-on-one for his sixth goal of the season.
Following a stretch pass from Darnell Nurse, Nugent-Hopkins beat Dostal on a breakaway to give Edmonton a 3-2 lead.
With two minutes remaining in the period, McDavid set up Hyman for a one-time goal at the bottom of the circle that gave him his eleventh of the year.
After Dostal gave up a rebound, Hamblin scored his second NHL goal of the season five minutes into the second period. At 7:20, Hyman scored his second goal of the game on a breakaway backhand, ending Dostal’s night.
NOTES: The Oilers kicked off a stretch of eight straight home games… Anaheim made the prudent decision to pass on Leo Carlsson, who was 2023’s second-overall pick. The Ducks had a 22-9 advantage over their previous five opponents coming into this game.
