Rising tennis star Katie Boulter of Britain won her first-ever WTA 500 event and advanced to the San Diego Open final.
The top-ranked player in the UK overcame a set deficit to upset Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine in the championship final, winning 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.
After her triumph, Katie Boulter—who has had a remarkable start to the 2024 season—will surely make her maiden appearance in the top 30 of the WTA rankings.
The sixth-seeded Kostyuk grabbed charge and won the first set 7–5, capping a tight opening exchange between the two players.
But in the second game, Boulter found her groove, winning 6-2 on her first serve and bringing the match to a decisive third set, which she won 6-2 as well.
After successfully defending his championship in Acapulco, tennis player Alex de Minaur had scheduled an early morning trip and was keeping an eye on the 27-year-old from Leicestershire.
After the game, she expressed her appreciation to the international player.
“I want to say a small, special thank you to my boyfriend,” commented the woman.
Because he finished at midnight last night, I have a strong desire to damage his feelings.
“He got on a 4.15am taxi this morning and a 6am flight to be here today, so I do appreciate it.”
In order to reach the championship match, Boulter prevailed against Donna Vekic, Beatriz Haddad Maia, Emma Navarro, the third seed, and Lesia Tsurenko, a Ukrainian professional tennis player.
Boulter’s first-ever victory in a grass championship, which took place in Nottingham the previous summer, is followed by this one.
