UConn women’s basketball held a 2-0 lead over the Dayton Flyers in their 2023–24 season for the first forty minutes of their 102–58 victory on Wednesday at the XL Centre.

Azzi Fudd’s two free throws and the Flyers’ administrative error that resulted in a technical foul call gave the Huskies the lead prior to play.

In the first half of her first game in 584 days, Paige Bueckers scored eight points on 3-of-9 shooting, pulled down seven rebounds, and dishevelled four assists. She spent twenty-one minutes participating, eight of which were in the second half—nine more than during the exposition.

UConn was led by Aaliyah Edwards, who scored 23 points (10–12). The other five ladies who scored in double figures were Fudd (13), Aubrey Gryphon (12), Qadence Samuels (11), Nika Mühl (10), and Caroline Ducharme (10). A total of 12 players scored.

Eight turnovers were given up by the Huskies, fewer than the total in every game except one during the previous campaign. Their bench scored 38 points for the team.

After missing the first four shots of the season, Edwards made UConn’s first basket of the year. The lead was eleven points after five minutes. At the half, the Huskies had an eight-point advantage, but Dayton could only muster two shots. At the half, UConn leads by 28 points.

In the third quarter, the Huskies held the Flyers to only four baskets, increasing their lead to forty points. They scored nine goals in a row during the quarter. They scored 100 points with 3:55 left, winning the first game 44–44.
