Manchester United make no effort to prevent further humiliation against Luton (17:25, Karl Matchett).
The Old Trafford corner choruses were a deluge of mockery. “You are embarrassing,” Luton Town fans sang as their team trailed. Manchester United avoided disgrace that day. That may be all they can hope for, but Erik ten Hag’s team nearly won the most winnable game.
They were lacklustre, and there was no indication to predict a turnaround or a better run in a tougher stretch after the international break. But they won.
That may be due to their growing injury list or Ten Hag’s reluctance to pick Raphael Varane. Since Jonny Evans was sidelined until December, Victor Lindelof was recalled. United had 31 minutes to relish and protect an advantage after the Swede scored his fourth goal in almost 250 games. United had only led at Old Trafford for 28 minutes in the Premier League all season.
It was a quiet victory in comparison to their defeat in Copenhagen on Wednesday. Manchester needed it to escape a historic decline, to stop falling again, and to finish sixth in the table despite their failures.
United vs. Luton Town:
MU celebrate a much-needed 1-0 win thanks to Lindelof’s 59th-minute winner! Onana spectacularly saved Morris’ header after 10 minutes after Kaminski stopped his first Premier League goal. For the hosts, Hojlund should have scored. With little over 30 minutes left, Rashford’s cross caused havoc before Lindelof scored.
