After beating Burnley 2-0, Liverpool reclaimed the top spot in the Premier League rankings, while Manchester United overcame a two-point deficit to upset Aston Villa 3-2.
Manchester United lost their Premier League match at Old Trafford against Aston Villa 3-2 after giving up two goals in the first twenty-six minutes of play.
Supporters of Erik ten Hag’s team heckled him during the first half of Wednesday’s (AEDT) opening game after it was announced that British tycoon Jim Ratcliffe would purchase up to 25% of the 20-time league champions.
Leander Dendoncker and John McGinn scored goals as Villa overcame Burnley 2-0, and it looked like they were closing the gap on league leaders Liverpool in terms of points. Although Rasmus Hojlund of United rallied for the victory in the 82nd minute, Alejandro Garnacho of Argentina scored twice.
After the break, teenage sensation Garnacho’s two goals and a daring left-foot volley from Danish striker Hojlund, 20, who had finished as United’s top scorer in their disastrous Champions League campaign but had gone 16 games without scoring in domestic competition, completely turned the tide of the match.
Hojlund told Amazon Prime, “You can see in the celebrations as well that I’m the happiest man alive right now.”
“I feel at ease now that I’ve responded to the first one; perhaps I can go on.
“We believed until the end, and we showed a lot of character again today.”
The outcome was much needed for the Red Devils, who had lost four games in a row without a goal.

Darwin Nunez’s well-placed goal gave the Reds the lead at Turf Moor after only six minutes, after the teams had drawn their first two league games against Manchester United and the Gunners. On the opposite side of the table, Nottingham Forest defeated Newcastle United 3-1 and avoided relegation thanks to three goals from New Zealand captain Chris Wood.
Alexander Isak’s penalty strike gave the home team the lead at St. James’ Park in the 23rd minute.
Wood’s two goals in the opening seven minutes of the second half earned new manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s first victory as the team’s manager after the team had lost seven straight league games. Wood tied the game in the opening half of extra time.
Because of the former Magpie’s treble, Luton Town was still in the bottom three, even after defeating Sheffield United 3-2.
It was historic because black official Sam Allison was officiating a Premier League match at Brammall Lane for the first time in fifteen years. Unfortunately, this historic occasion was marred by racial taunts from a Blades supporter directed at Carlton Morris of Luton; the police were notified of the incident.
