Edugyan stated that the decision was not unanimous and it took approximately six hours to make on Saturday before awarding the reward on Sunday.
“It is with great pleasure that I return the Booker to Ireland,” said Lynch.
I had a stunning realization years ago, while on vacation in Sicily, that writing was my calling and the direction my life should take. I made the decision to just veer that day, and I did exactly that. and I’m very glad I did.
Who is this Paul Lynch?
The 46-year-old Limerick native served as the Sunday Tribune’s chief film critic from 2007 to 2011, the final year of the publication’s existence. Besides that, he wrote Sunday Times movie reviews.
This was prior to the publication of Red Sky in the Morning, his critically praised debut book that sparked a bidding war among publishers in 2013. Lynch sets this novel, which explores a somber tale of oppression—a recurring theme in his works—in Donegal, his birthplace.
Since then, he has had three pieces published: The Black Snow (2014), Grace (2017), and Beyond the Sea (coming in 2019). Renowned writers such as Cormac McCarthy and William Faulkner compare him to their own work due to his emphasis on the capacity of the human spirit to endure hardship.

“My rational side warned me that publishing this piece would jeopardize my job. I still had the book to read. In cases like this, we don’t get to make the decision.
While turmoil broke out in his hometown of Dublin, Lynch received the medal during the same weekend.
The man said, “Like everyone else, I was amazed by it.”
But I also see that beneath the surface, this kind of energy is constantly there. My intention in writing this book was to convey the idea that the events it recounts are occurring everywhere in time and space, not to warn readers explicitly.”
