For more than an hour, Elon Musk‘s X platform—previously known as Twitter—basically stopped operating. The timings for mobile apps stayed the same, and a placeholder message said, “Welcome to X! The best spot to see what’s going on in your world is right here. Pick a few people and subjects to follow at this time. The “significant international outage” that Netblocks’ global internet trackers noted was unrelated to any country-level blocks or filters.

Timelines were once again available shortly after this post was released, at roughly 1:35 AM ET, although the root of the issue is still unknown.

Strangely, even though the postings vanished after a refresh, publishing to the website carried on as usual, and accounts that had enabled notifications continued to show up in that feed along with push notifications for new content. Even though they couldn’t see any new posts, more than eight hundred people discussed the outage on Space, where reporter Ryan Mac of the New York Times was the host.

No significant information was visible because the timelines on the accounts of Support, X CEO Linda Yaccarino, and owner/CTO Elon Musk were blank. Moreover, the API status page for the service was not updated to reflect any problems.

Problems appear to have been reported on DownDetector just before 12:30 AM ET, but no explanation for the issue or an estimated time of service restoration have been given.

There have been more significant outages on the website lately. Last week, there was a disruption in outgoing connectivity for many hours due to a different issue. Those that pay for premium service (or hope to be paid) received an automated “Busy now, please check back later” email from the platform’s PR account. As usual, these individuals will need to go elsewhere for updates on the platform’s status.
