Shamar Joseph of the West Indies had trouble in his IPL opening match against KKR vs. LSG

Rookie Shamar Joseph of the Lucknow Super Giants of the Indian Premier League had a challenging Sunday. Joseph’s Kolkata Knight Riders debut was challenging. In his debut league over and innings, Joseph gave up 22 runs because of two no-balls and multiple wides.

Fascinatingly, the first five instances of overdelivery had some validity. On the first dot ball of the match, Shamar Joseph hit Philip Salt with a soaring off-stump delivery. The KKR opener was unable to keep the ball off the splice left of the backward point, with no runs scored.

Joseph set Salt up for a single with a middle delivery and a back leg stump. In a hurry, Joseph delivered something outdoors at 146 kmph. Sunil Narine established a boundary by hitting the ball behind the covers with a backward motion.

On the fourth delivery, Joseph got Narine to slog with a short ball, but a hard top edge caught him for two runs. Following Narine’s mishandled off-side drive, Stump appeared. KL Rahul dove to his right, but the ball flew past the batsman and wicketkeeper, leaving the batters stranded.

That was the start of the drama.

Shamar Joseph used his front foot to hit Philip Salt hard with a swift leg-side no-ball move. A pull shot by the opening left a thick inside edge to the right of the short, fine leg. The ball escaped Yash Thakur’s grasp as he dove.

Joseph hit a wide and a five-wide before Salt misplayed a slog, and the ball soared out to the left of the diving wicketkeeper for five wides.

Joseph bowled wide down the leg side again, but the no-ball alarm went off. After the free hit, Salt smashed Joseph’s penultimate ball past long off to score six figures.

One of the longest IPL overs ended with 22 runs off 10 deliveries. Joseph cost the Super Giants eight wickets after scoring 47 runs in four overs without taking a wicket.

Keep the KKR top-four together as a team

Kolkata Knight Riders overcame LSG on Sunday to hold second place and challenge Rajasthan Royals for first. Samson has ten points after six games; KKR has five. The Knight Riders earn eight points.
