Suspension of Sri Lanka Cricket by the ICC Board

The ICC on Friday suspended the Sri Lanka cricket administration.

Due to “government interference,” the International Cricket Council suspended Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Friday. The cricket board’s suspension occurred less than a day after Sri Lanka’s final group match of the 2023 World Cup, in which the nation recorded two victories out of nine contests.

“A release from cricket’s governing body stated, “The ICC Board met today and determined that Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a member, specifically the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation, and/or administration of cricket in SL.” “The ICC Board will determine the terms of the suspension in due time.”

Sri Lanka’s cricket board was upset after its 302-run loss to India in the 2023 World Cup, in which it was dismissed for 55. The sports minister dismissed the entire cricket board shortly after the defeat, exacerbating the already dire crisis situation. The court of appeals did, nevertheless, immediately reinstate Sri Lanka Cricket.

Sri Lanka Government and Opposition:

On Thursday, a joint government-opposition resolution in parliament sought the SLC’s resignation, according to PTI.

A report proposed an office-runner-voting regulator constitution despite government arguments over the minister’s SLC board of management firing.

Pramodaya Wickramasinghe, Sri Lanka’s chief selector, earlier blamed an “external conspiracy” for the team’s World Cup humiliation. After arriving at the airport, Wickramasinghe, a 1996 tournament winner, said, “Give me two days to explain everything. This was the consequence of an external conspiracy, according to a PTI source.

In the 2023 World Cup, SL defeated the Netherlands and England after a tough battle. The 1996 champions had to use outside substitutes due to a series of injuries before and during the tournament. Kusal Mendis became captain midway through the competition when Dasun Shanaka was injured.

Sri Lanka is currently ninth in the standings; the remaining group stage games will determine their final placing.
